Mayor Mark Lacis and his two sons pose for a photo

Dear Superior,

I have decided that 2026 will be my final year on the Superior Town Council.

It has been an honor to serve as your Mayor and Town Trustee for the past ten years. I still remember my first campaign event at Superior's Chili & Beer Fest in 2016. My boys were just four years old. Now, they’re about to head off to high school, and I don’t want to miss any of it.

This was not an easy decision. Serving this community has been a great privilege, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together over the past decade.

Mayor Mark Lacis and his two young children pose at a campaign booth

There is still a lot of work to do in 2026… so this is not a goodbye. I am going to continue working hard for Superior until my term ends this November. Then it will be time for a new chapter.

If you’ve ever thought about stepping up and being a leader in this community, consider running for Mayor or Councilmember. The deadline to petition onto the ballot is later this month.

All my best,
Mark

Ready Together: Community Alert Drill helps families prepare for emergencies

A hand holding a pencil checks off items on an emergency preparedness checklist

Save the date! In recognition of National Preparedness Month, the Town of Superior's Disaster Preparedness and Recovery department is hosting a new Ready Together: Community Alert Drill in September. This fun, family-friendly preparedness event helps households practice what to do in a real emergency.

Step 1: Gather for the Ready Together pre-meeting.

When: Tuesday, Sept. 15 | 6 to 7 p.m.
Where: Superior Civic Space (2250 Main St., Suite 1001)
What to expect: Before the drill, families are encouraged to gather for a short meeting to discuss expectations, decide who is responsible for key tasks, review their household emergency plan, and ensure everyone, including children, older adults, and pets, knows their role. As a special part of the drill, residents with pets are invited to help us test a new pet preparedness app.

Step 2: Participate in the Community Alert Drill.

When: Saturday, Sept. 19 | 10 a.m.
Where: Your home
What to expect: Boulder County will send a clearly marked test alert. Once received, households start a timer and put their emergency plan into action. Family members gather their essential items, load their grab-list necessities into their vehicle, and stop the timer once everyone and everything is safely loaded and they are ready to go. There is no driving during the drill.
Registration: Please register for this event. Additionally, if you would like to participate and are not yet registered to receive emergency notifications, register through BoCo Alert.

Step 3: Debrief with a post-event meeting and lunch.

When: Saturday, Sept. 19 | 1 p.m.
Where: Superior Civic Space (2250 Main St., Suite 1001)
What to expect: Afterward, families may join us for a free lunch and celebrate with a Ready Together post-event debrief. The goal of the drill is to build confidence, reduce stress, and ensure that every member of the household, including our furry family members, knows what to do when every minute counts.

Let's join together and strengthen our community's preparedness!

RTD Route 228 to remain in service

RTD Route 228 bus

Thanks to advocacy from Superior residents and Town staff, Superior's only fixed-route neighborhood bus service will remain operational.

RTD announced in July that Route 228, which connects residents to Downtown Superior, local neighborhoods, and the U.S. 36 and McCaslin Park-n-Ride, will remain in service with minor changes to its operating hours. The bus route will be available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

It's important to note that RTD is still facing significant budget issues, which could result in future service cuts across the Front Range as soon as 2027.

Rock Creek Parkway and Indiana Street projects ongoing

Rock Creek Parkway construction in August 2026

Rock Creek Parkway

Rock Creek Parkway construction will continue through October.

Crews are currently working on the north side of Rock Creek Parkway between Indiana Street and 88th Street, as well as at the intersection of 88th Street and Coal Creek Drive. Rock Creek Parkway at 88th Street will be open by Aug. 12.

Once this phase is finished, crews will move east to complete Rock Creek Parkway reconstruction from Honey Creek Lane to Coalton Road.

The project includes the full reconstruction of the roadway, curb-and-gutter improvements, upgraded sidewalks, and enhanced bike and pedestrian facilities. A single-lane roundabout is being installed at the intersection of Rock Creek Parkway and Coal Creek Drive, and the roundabout at 88th Street and Rock Creek Parkway will be reduced to a single-lane roundabout, improving safety for all users.

Indiana Street construction in August 2026

Indiana Street

Indiana Street construction continues, with crews currently working on the second phase, which includes a full closure of Indiana Street between McCaslin Boulevard and Mount Sopris Way.

This closure will shift in early August to the section from North Torreys Peak to Mount Sopris Way as crews complete top-lift paving.

Upon completion, Indiana Street will be fully reconstructed, with additional curb-and-gutter improvements, upgraded sidewalks, and enhanced bike and pedestrian facilities.

Construction will conclude before the start of the 2026/27 school year, so school traffic will not be affected.

Don't forget that you can now visit the Town's new interactive road construction map for detailed views of closures, detours, and more.

88th Street bike and pedestrian upgrades improve safety for students

Bike ramp on 88th Street

This summer, Superior and Louisville have been hard at work ensuring 88th Street is safer for students traveling to and from Monarch PK-8 and Monarch High schools.

As part of this project, crews:

  • Installed bike ramps connecting the existing sidewalks to the separated bike lane on 88th Street; and
  • Extended the school zone south towards Promenade Drive.

The upgrade allows bikes to move seamlessly from the sidewalk into the bike lane near Promenade and Campus drives, enhancing safety during school commute times.

Additional improvements are planned for 2027, as the Town is working closely with CDOT to complete the recently awarded Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grant. This grant funds a permanently separated bike lane along 88th Street from Promenade Drive to Campus Drive.

Completed alley chip seal work in Original Town Superior

Original Town project now complete

In addition to the 88th Street project, crews have concluded the Original Town alley and roadway stabilization project.

This work provides the alleys and roads with a hard surface that eliminates dust, allows plowing, and offers an expected useful life of approximately 5 to 7 years.

Understanding prairie dogs in Superior

A prairie dog sticks its head out of a hole in the dirt

The Town of Superior is home to several colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs, a native species that is an important part of Colorado's grassland ecosystem. Prairie dog populations naturally fluctuate over time in response to factors such as weather, predators, disease, and drought.

While prairie dogs provide important ecological benefits by supporting native wildlife and reducing vegetation that can contribute to wildfire risk, expanding colonies can also create challenges for nearby residents. Burrowing near private property may damage landscaping and other improvements, and may increase interactions with people and pets.

Learn more by visiting the Town's new Prairie Dog Information webpage.
