The Town of Superior will be working on noxious weed mitigation in the Coyote Ridge Open Space this winter and spring.
Olson Outdoors, under the direction of wildfire consultant Bintel Inc., was engaged by the Town to conduct wildfire mitigation efforts funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program\An essential component of wildfire mitigation in open space areas is the reduction of noxious or invasive weed species, which tend to provide wildfire fuel that burns longer and hotter than typical native species.
The weed mitigation efforts in Coyote Ridge will include both mechanical removal of weeds, typically by hand, and targeted herbicide applications to address aggressive weed invasion. Crews will be well-identified in company logoed attire and will have signage indicating they are conducting wildfire mitigation. The crews will apply herbicide in accordance with the Town’s Weed and Pest Management Program. Targeted herbicide methods include using the product sparingly at the lowest possible dosage and applying it within proximity to the identified noxious weed plant. No applications will be conducted within 10 feet of trails, and the product is inert once dry.
