Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, is a decision-making approach that uses a combination of prevention, monitoring and control strategies to manage weeds and pests responsibly.

Rather than relying on one method, IPM considers the specific site, the weed or pest present, the level of impact and the most appropriate response. This helps reduce unnecessary treatments and supports healthier parks, open spaces and landscaped areas.

The Town’s IPM approach generally follows four steps:

1. Set action thresholds to determine when a response is needed.
2. Monitor and identify weeds or pests before choosing a control method.
3. Use prevention practices to reduce future weed and pest issues.
4. Apply control methods when needed, beginning with lower-risk options.

Before taking action, Town staff and contractors evaluate whether weeds or pests are present at a level that requires a response. Not every weed or insect requires immediate control.

Prevention and non-chemical control methods are an important part of the program. These may include improving soil health, aerating turf, adding soil amendments, mulching trees and maintaining healthy plant material. Healthy landscapes are generally less vulnerable to weeds and pests.

When control is needed, lower-risk options such as mowing weeds before they go to seed or hand-pulling smaller areas may be used before chemical treatment is considered. Herbicides and pesticides may be used when monitoring shows that treatment is necessary and other methods are not sufficient for the situation.

When chemical controls are used, they are applied in targeted areas, at the lowest effective application rate possible and in accordance with product labels and applicable regulations.

Applications are performed by licensed and certified applicators or individuals working under proper supervision. Applicators are responsible for reading and following product labels, using required personal protective equipment, properly maintaining equipment and complying with Colorado Department of Agriculture requirements.

Safety practices may include using spot treatments instead of broad applications when possible, properly locking and storing products, clearly marking pesticide vehicles, following label requirements and managing products carefully to reduce excess pesticide use on site.

Pesticide labels also use signal words to describe relative risk. These include Caution, Warning, Danger and Danger-Poison. Following the label is one of the most important ways to protect applicators, the public and the environment.

Public safety and environmental conditions are considered before and during pesticide applications. Before treatment, application areas are inspected for people, environmental hazards and targeted weeds or pests.

The Town follows Colorado Department of Agriculture requirements for pesticide application notices and posted signs. The Town also uses additional notification practices for pesticide applications.

Applicators evaluate factors such as wind, temperature, terrain, soil conditions, runoff potential and proximity to sensitive areas. The program emphasizes reducing drift, protecting groundwater, recognizing sensitive plants and wildlife, following precautions for threatened or endangered species, and using proper spill prevention, control and cleanup procedures.

Mechanical removal of Purple Loosestrife will also occur this week in hot spots around town.
