Superior Sentinel: July 2025

Published on July 01, 2025

Hello Superior,

As summer rolls along, so do our road construction projects. This summer, we’re focusing on some really important projects in Town:

  • McCaslin Boulevard & Rock Creek Parkway Intersection
  • McCaslin Boulevard Water Main Installation
  • Rock Creek Parkway Bridge Rehabilitation
  • Sagamore Neighborhood, Sycamore Street, and 76th Street Asphalt Work
  • Coalton Road Resurfacing

Road projects are never fun and no one likes driving through construction zones. But they are necessary and important and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we proceed with work during the limited summer construction season.

Please note, one project that we had originally planned for 2025 — Rock Creek Parkway from Indiana to 88th Street — will be completed in 2026, instead of 2025. After examining the condition of the soils, the engineering team determined that more substantial road work will be necessary to bring the street in line with Town standards.

To follow along with our Public Works Department projects, please visit the Town Project webpage.

Respectfully,
Mayor Mark Lacis

Goat grazing returns to Superior this summer

A goat relaxes in a field

You "herd" it here first! Goat Bros, Hoof-Action Grazing is returning to provide summer grazing services in Superior!

This will be the third year Goat Bros has provided their herd of 300 goats to graze in the Town. Goat grazing contributes to the Town's wildfire mitigation efforts as it's a popular method for reducing brush and overgrowth in open space areas. In addition to reducing fuel loads, the goats help fertilize the soil naturally. Native seed is distributed throughout the grazing sites so the goats' hooves help sow it into the soil.

This summer, grazing will begin in a native open space parcel north of Fire Station Park and east of McCaslin Boulevard. The goats are then scheduled to move north and graze native open space parcels along the east edge of McCaslin between Christenson Avenue and Rock Creek Parkway.

Please remember that the goats are busy working and not to be disturbed. Your safety is essential, and we ask that you be respectful and follow all instructions from Goat Bros.

Let's all work together to be responsible pet owners!

Two people walking on a path in Superior with dog on a leash.

Please help keep our beautiful parks and open spaces healthy and safe for all by picking up after your furry friends and ensuring they remain on leash.

Leashing your dog is required by ordinance in Superior, but doing so keeps your pup safe, protects our local wildlife, and ensures open spaces remain a joy for everyone.

It's also important to pick up after your dogs when you're out enjoying Superior's parks, trails, and open spaces.

Aside from being a stinky nuisance, dog poop contains bacteria and parasites that can create health hazards for humans, wildlife and other dogs. When it’s left on the ground and not disposed of properly, dog feces can add harmful bacteria and nutrients to local waters.

Bring bags along and pack extra in case you run out or need to help a neighbor who forgot theirs. Make sure those bags end up in a trash can at the end of your walk! There are courtesy bags and trash cans located throughout Superior.

And don't forget, there are two dog parks in town where your dog can enjoy off-leash fun: Autrey Park Dog Park (1830 Honey Creek Drive) and Central Park Dog Park (2560 Central Park Way).

Let's all be responsible pet owners! Thank you for doing your part to keep Superior beautiful.

Help support water efficiency this irrigation season!

Sprinklers watering equal parts grass and sidewalk

It is that time of year when Superior residents routinely irrigate lawns and vegetative areas on their property.

Irrigation is needed to maintain these spaces around your home during the dry summer months. However, residents should closely monitor the amount of irrigation water applied as over-irrigation has many drawbacks.

Irrigation water is not separated from regular water use and is charged the same way. Because of this, over-irrigating can result in unnecessary water charges.

In addition, over-irrigating can result in water runoff, causing water to run across public infrastructure like sidewalks. This often results in moss growth, a code violation in Superior.

Lastly, excess irrigation water can have negative consequences for your home's foundation. This water can drain near homes and impact the high-swale potential soils around Superior.

The Town offers several resources to promote water efficiency. Learn more on the Town's Sustainable Water webpage.

Disaster Preparedness and Recovery

Take advantage of the Wildfire Partners General Rebate Program!

Wildfire Partners logo

Are you interested in receiving money to help protect your home from wildfires?

Consider applying to the Wildfire Partners General Rebate Program, which is open to all Boulder County residents who rent or own a home in the county.

These six mitigation measures are eligible through the program:

  • Junk your junipers: Remove this combustible plant from near your home.
  • Fences are fuses: Fully replace or retrofit sections of your fence with noncombustible materials.
  • The first five feet: Create a noncombustible zone around your home.
  • Vents for defense: Properly screen vents to prevent ember incursion.
  • Protect home base: Cover the bottom 6 inches of house siding with noncombustible material.
  • Cut the clutter: De-clutter under your deck to reduce risk of ember ignition.

The following actions are not eligible for a rebate: Weed whacking, tree removal, slash chipping/removal, applying fire retardant stain or paint to fences, planting vegetation, or enclosing spaces under decks.

Find out more and apply for the General Rebate Program on the Wildfire Partners website.

Learn more about the Colorado Fair Access to Insurance Requirements (FAIR) Plan

Colorado Fair Plan logo

The Colorado Fair Access to Insurance Requirements (FAIR) Plan is a program designed to provide property insurance coverage for homeowners and businesses when coverage is unavailable through traditional means.

Wildfire Partners recently attended a webinar about the Fair Plan and shared what they learned:

The Fair Plan comes at a higher cost with limited coverage. It should only be used as a last resort.

The Fair Plan exists to address availability not affordability.

Eligibility:

Homeowners must be rejected by 3 different standard insurance companies to qualify for the Fair Plan.

Fair Plan policies may be renewed for 3 years. After 3 years, homeowners must reprove eligibility.

Major differences between the Fair Plan and Standard Insurance Policies:

  • Fair Plan provides an Actual Cash Value (ACV) rather than cost to rebuild as in standard policies.
  • Additional living expenses are not available with the Fair Plan.
  • Actual Cash Value (ACV) is replacement cost minus the depreciation (decrease in home value due to age and wear & tear).

Only $750,000 in coverage is available for homes (residential property).

For example, the Fair Plan can accept a $2 million home, but with only $750,000 worth of coverage. Other policies (like wrap-around policies) can work with Fair Plan policies to fill in gaps.

Homeowners can not buy insurance from the Fair Plan directly.

The Fair Plan website lists agents all over the country who have agreed to provide coverage through this program. The homeowner must work directly with an insurance agent from the Fair Plan list.
