Summer is heating up. Keep your pets safe!
As the summer heat continues, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office Animal Protection Unit is here to remind you to protect your pets by never leaving them alone in a vehicle.
Even on mild days, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dangerously fast, putting your pet at serious risk of heatstroke, brain damage, or even death.
Here are some tips:
- If you’re running errands, leave pets at home.
- If they must come along, never leave them unattended in a vehicle—even for a few minutes.
- Provide plenty of water, shade, and rest during outdoor activities.
Let’s keep our furry friends safe and healthy all summer long!
To report an incident or speak with an Animal Protection Officer, you can call 303-441-4444.

New pedestrian crossing flags improve safety near Superior Elementary School
The Town of Superior has joined the growing number of communities across the United States implementing pedestrian crossing flags to enhance safety.
At the intersection of Heartstrong and Indiana streets near Superior Elementary School, the Public Works Department has installed neon orange reflective flags to assist pedestrians when crossing.
Here's how it works:
Containers holding the flags are located on both sides of the crosswalk. To use the system, pedestrians simply grab a flag, hold it up, wait for traffic to stop, and proceed carefully across the street while keeping the flag visible. Once safely across, the flag can be placed in the container for the next person.
This added visibility helps drivers see pedestrians more easily — especially during poor weather or nighttime conditions — and contributes to safer crossings.

Portion of Meadowlark Trail closing Sept. 1 to Oct. 31 for cattle grazing
A portion of the Meadowlark Trail at Coalton Trailhead will temporarily close on Sept. 1 for cattle grazing. The closed section starts at the Coalton Trailhead and runs north toward the Oerman-Roche Trailhead, highlighted in pink on the map below. Coalton Trail and all other trails remain open during this time.
Boulder County manages cattle grazing, which plays a key role in reducing wildfire risk and improving soil health. Keeping the trail closed ensures visitor safety. A visitor was previously injured after stepping between a mother cow and her calf.
We appreciate your understanding as we work to balance trail access with important land management efforts. Our goal is to reduce fire risk, improve soil health, and keep our community safe, minimizing the inconvenience for trail users as much as possible.
This portion of the Meadowlark Trail will remain closed through Oct. 31. Visit Boulder County's websiteto learn more.

Community Park playground gets a much needed update
Final design renderings for the Community Park playground renovation project will be presented for Superior Town Council approval on Aug. 25. Public comment is welcome at the meeting.
Town staff conducted public engagement on the project, including engagement tables at two community events and a community session at the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting in July. During these conversations, residents expressed overwhelming support for the proposed design.
The Community Park Playground is aging and requires renovation to meet the needs of the community. The 17,000-square-foot play area will be renovated to include new, fun and inclusive play equipment and poured-in-place surfacing, while also vastly improving ADA accessibility and overall safety for ages 2-12.
Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, pending Town Council approval later this month.
Find more information and keep up-to-date on this project by visiting the Town Projects Page.

Tackle air quality with information and activation
You may notice that as the summer temperatures creep up, smog also seems to get thicker.
This is because ground-level ozone pollution, created by air pollutants like those from vehicle fumes, industrial operations and motorized lawn equipment, tends to increase during the hot months of July and August.
In addition to supporting more measures to reduce ozone pollution, you can play a role in decreasing air pollution and stay healthy:
- Carpool, bike, or use public transportation instead of driving by yourself
- Combine trips by picking one day to run your errands
- Exercise early or late in the day
- Electrify your lawn and garden equipment (and take advantage of the 30% discount on electric lawn equipment – see a list of participating retailers fromCOPIRG)
- Use a HEPA or equivalent quality air purifier indoors to reduce many air pollutants that cause breathing difficulties when ozone is higher
Keep track of air quality in Superior by checking ourPurple Air Sensor Map.You can also see local ozone and air quality information by visitingCDPHE's daily air quality monitoring dashboard, get alerts for poor air quality days by texting “BETTERAIRCO” to 21000 orsigning up for e-mail alerts.
