Superior Sentinel: February 2025

Published on February 01, 2025

Hello Superior!

On Jan. 13, the Town Council approved the installation of an ADA accessible multi-use path and pedestrian bridge over Coal Creek at Grasso Park. The multi-use path will extend through Grasso Park from 1st Avenue to the Coal Creek Trail under McCaslin Boulevard and provide trail connectivity between Original Town and Downtown Superior, while the bridge will provide pedestrian connectivity to Rogers Farm.

Given the historical importance of the structures in Grasso Park, the Town contracted for a Class III cultural resource inventory, architectural inventory, and geoarchaeological assessment, which concluded that the addition of a new pedestrian path and bridge should not result in adverse effects to the historic homestead properties as a result of this project.

Nevertheless, active construction near the buildings on Grasso Park will be monitored by an archaeologist to ensure that no buildings or equipment are being altered or directly impacted by project. This project is being led by Mile High Flood District (MHFD) and jointly funded by MHFD, Rogers Farm Developer, and Town of Superior. MHFD is funding 50% of the project.

Construction is scheduled to start in February and will take approximately three to four months to complete.

Respectfully,
Mayor Mark Lacis

New three cart waste program kicks off in March. Pick your new carts by Feb. 15!

Three sizes of garbage carts at the Superior Community Center

The Town of Superior’s new “three cart program” will provide many residents access to three separate carts for waste: garbage, recycling, and compost.

The new Town contract with Republic Services will be starting March 31. Participating residents need to pick out their new carts by Feb. 15 so that Republic can place cart orders and deliver your requested sizes prior to service. Residents on the Town contract should be on the lookout for a postcard in their mailbox with service and cart information and a calendar.

Town waste hauling service is currently provided for residents of Original Town, Sagamore, The Ridge, Coal Creek Crossing, Downtown Superior, Calmante, Lanterns, Autrey Shores, and Rogers Farm.

The service changes do not impact Rock Creek, the Summit at Rock Creek, Saddlebrooke, or multifamily residents. More neighborhoods will be added to the Town contract in the future.

Residents can mix and match cart sizes for all three waste streams. The cost customers will pay ranges from $19.14 a month to $42.02 a month, based on garbage cart size. Any size recycling and compost cart is included in the cost.

If you live in a Town-serviced neighborhood, please email or call Nicole at Republic at NMontoya@republicservices.com or 720-760-0849 to place your cart size selection order.

New Operations and Maintenance Facility in the works

On Jan. 13, the Town Council approved a design-build contract to construct the Town’s first Operations and Maintenance Facility, which will provide a much needed upgrade to currently cramped facilities. The proposed facility will house the Public Works and Parks, Recreation & Open Space field staff, materials, and equipment. The facility will be near the Town’s Wastewater Treatment Plant off Honey Creek Drive.

Design has started for the proposed 7,400-square-foot facility, which will include office space, training rooms, and locker rooms for staff, as well as four drive-through bays, including a wash bay and lift bay for fleet maintenance.

Residents invited to Feb. 20 meeting on Rock Creek Parkway and Coal Creek Drive improvements

Aerial image of Rock Creek parkway

The Town is hosting a neighborhood meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20 to discuss proposed intersection improvements at Rock Creek Parkway and Coal Creek Drive.

The project aims to address input from residents about the difficulty of turning on and off Rock Creek Parkway from Coal Creek Drive, especially during peak hours.

Potential solutions include a stop-controlled intersection, a roundabout, and a possible traffic signal.

Intersection improvements will occur later this year as part of the Rock Creek Parkway roadway improvement project.

Attendance in person at Superior Town Hall (124 E. Coal Creek Drive) is encouraged, but the meeting will also be held virtually on Zoom.

Traffic signal heads upgraded throughout Town

Town staff has completed a project to repair and upgrade all backplates on traffic signal heads in Superior.

These backplates provide enhanced visibility, create a consistent look throughout Town, and are designed to flex in the wind which will save on future maintenance costs.

Keep an eye out for the upgraded signal heads as you travel around Superior!

Parking enforcement underway in Downtown Superior

Two-hour parking sign in Downtown Superior

We look forward to your next visit to Downtown Superior! Whether you're shopping, dining, or just enjoying a stroll along Main Street, the downtown area offers free parking at multiple locations.

Please note that on-street limits vary from two hours on Main Street to three hours on adjacent streets. All vehicles must be registered using the QR codes posted on Downtown signs, even if you plan on staying less than the allowed free time. Be sure to read the posted signs or refer to the parking map on our website. The Town is contracting with Parkwell to help manage parking. Parkwell began issuing citations in January.

To help ensure the 1,075 parking spaces in the Downtown Superior (DTS) core area are used efficiently and effectively, the Town has been working with commercial property owners there and the Superior Town Center Metropolitan Districts to implement the DTS parking plan. Studies showed peak parking demand for 1,061 spaces, so parking in DTS may be tight during busy periods but is generally sufficient to meet the needs of this active neighborhood.

Parking restrictions along with two- and three-hour allowed parking times noted above are now in place for many public parking spaces in the core area around Main Street and the parking structures.

Study reveals strong community support for regional bike share program

Two people smile while riding electric bikes

Commuting Solutions and BCycle, in collaboration with local governments and businesses, have completed the Northwest Regional Bike Share Feasibility Study. The study explored the feasibility, cost, and implementation of a regional bike share system that would encompass Boulder, City and County of Broomfield, Boulder County, Erie, Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville, Superior, and Westminster.

Key findings indicate strong community support for a regional, docked e-bike share system to expand mobility options locally and to provide connectivity between modes of travel identified in the Northwest Area Mobility Study. Initial funding to start implementing the regional bike share has already been secured!
