Retention Ponds

What is a retention pond?

Retention ponds collect excess rainwater and help prevent flooding in the surrounding area. These ponds are unique because they hold some water year-round.

Why is the water a greenish color?

The Town of Superior, along with the Mile High Flood District, removes built-up sediment and vegetation from the pond as needed to maintain sufficient extra storage space for rainwater. This work stirs up nutrients from the pond bottom that support plant growth. With more nutrients available after work, more algae and duckweed can grow in the water that remains in the pond between rain events.

What can I do to help?

Floating green plants love nutrients. To help reduce the amount of nutrients that wash into the pond:

  • Use fertilizers carefully (check your local government's suggestions for your area)
  • Properly dispose of lawn clippings and leaves
  • Pick up and properly dispose of pet waste
