Superior residents: New WUI Code may apply to your parcel
The Superior Town Council is set to approve the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (WUI Code) this month.
A Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is a geographically defined area where human development, such as homes and infrastructure, meets or intermingles with undeveloped wildland vegetation. It is a critical area for wildfire risk.
Some parcels exist in the Town of Superior WUI designation, and residents are encouraged to search their address on the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code Map and note if their parcel is yellow or orange or a combination.
If your parcel on the map is identified as yellow or orange or a combination in the WUI zone, new standards will apply to your construction project. If your parcel does not fall into the WUI zone, the Town still encourages you to create defensible space around your home.
WUI code applies to:
- New construction of residential and commercial structures and defensible space around them
- Significant repairs/alterations
- Over 500 sq. ft. increased footprint of a structure
- Over 25% of an exterior of a structure affected
WUI code does not apply to:
- Interior alterations of any existing structure
- 35+ acre parcels with only one residential structure
- Exterior painting, staining and similar routine maintenance work
Learn more about the WUI Code on the Town website.

Support local farms with a CSA membership
February means it’s time to sign up for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program! A CSA is a direct relationship between farmers and community members who pay a membership fee for that season to help cover the farm’s production costs. In return for being a member, subscribers receive “shares” of the farm’s production during the season.
Check out the Boulder County Farmers Market’s local CSA guide for a list of some farms in the area that offer CSAs. Reach out to each individual farm to learn more about their CSA. You can also attend a CSA Fair to learn more about the farms, their different shares available, and the best fit for your household:

Town continuing to monitor water quality concerns from Chimney Hollow Reservoir
The Town of Superior receives most of its raw, untreated water from snow melt in the Upper Colorado River Basin as part of Northern Water's Big Thompson Project.
Northern Water has been working on the Chimney Hollow Reservoir project since 2021. Once complete, this project will help firm up water rights for several municipalities that rely on raw water from Northern Water, including Superior.
In 2023, a significant rain event prompted Northern Water to conduct emergency discharges from the cofferdam at Chimney Hollow Reservoir, located just west of Carter Lake in Larimer County. As required by environmental regulations, additional water quality testing was performed on the discharged water. These tests revealed elevated levels of uranium.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates uranium and has set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) at 30 micrograms per liter (µg/L), or 30 parts per billion.
Please note: Northern Water is committed to reducing uranium levels below the EPA's MCL before releasing water from the reservoir. No water will be delivered from Chimney Hollow Reservoir until all assessments are complete, and filling is on hold while they develop a mitigation plan.
Find out more about this project on the Town website or in this Frequently Asked Questions document from Northern Water.
