Watching your dog explore the natural world off-leash can be a joyful experience. However, it's important to remember that dog ownership comes with responsibility, too.

Superior's leash ordinance requires you to keep your pup leashed (unless you're visiting a designated off-leash area), but doing so is also the kind and neighborly thing to do!

Here are some reasons why it's important to leash your dogs:

1. Mange is on the move: Mange, caused by mites, is more than just an itch; it's a health hazard. These mites thrive in places coyotes frequent and can live off a host for 24 hours. Off-leash dogs exploring these areas are at risk of bringing home an unwelcome infestation.

2. Coyotes aren't just howling: This season, coyotes are busy rearing pups. An off-leash dog might seem threatening, which could lead to dangerous confrontations.

3. Small critters have a big impact: Small creatures like rabbits and voles are tiny but essential to our ecosystem. Off-leash dogs can disrupt this balance by hunting or scaring away this important wildlife.

4. Dog poop isn't just gross—it's harmful: Dog poop doesn't break down quickly and can grow harmful bacteria that can seep into water systems. Off-leash dogs are more likely to "go" where owners don't notice, leaving behind more than just paw prints

5. Off-leash dogs can cause anxiety: Some people and pets feel uneasy around off-leash dogs, no matter how friendly they are. Keeping your dog leashed is a courteous way to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable on our pathways and trails.
