Superior residents encouraged to use water wisely

Published on March 30, 2026

Colorado is experiencing extreme drought conditions, and it's crucial to do our part and use our water wisely.

Fortunately, as a Town, we have a strong water portfolio and are no longer projecting a water shortage for this year. Because of this, we are lifting the voluntary water restrictions.

However, other municipalities are not as fortunate, and we should do our part to conserve water. The ongoing drought, low snowpack, and warm temperatures are putting a strain on available water in Colorado. Your water usage plays a meaningful role in preserving our shared resources and maintaining system reliability.

Did you know that 45% of the Town’s water supply is used for irrigation purposes? Outdoor irrigation is one of the largest contributors to residential water use and a major source of unintentional waste. Small adjustments in how and when you water can make a significant difference. A single standard sprinkler head can release 2–4 gallons of water per minute. That means that in just 10 minutes, one sprinkler head uses 20 to 40 gallons of water, and a zone of four sprinkler heads uses approximately 120 gallons.

Wait to water lawns

  • Leaving automated sprinkler systems off as long as possible will save water.
  • Plan on programming your sprinkler system to start later in the season (mid-to-late May).
  • Hand-water trees and plants as needed.

Don't waste water

  • Water early in the morning (before 10 a.m.) or in the evening (after 6 p.m.) to minimize evaporation.
  • Don't waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt.
  • Promptly repair leaking sprinkler systems.
  • Use buckets or a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve if washing your car.

Ways to make your yards more waterwise

The Town, in partnership with Resource Central, offers programs to help residents use water more efficiently and create beautiful, low-water landscapes. Available resources include:

Northern Water also has a variety of valuable landscape resources with a wealth of information. Take advantage of these programs to reduce water use, save money, and choose plants and grasses that are well-adapted to Colorado's climate.

Town water use and reduction

The Town is responsible for maintaining athletic fields, parks, and landscape areas around Town. These areas are irrigated with a combination of reuse water provided through the Town’s water reuse system and raw water. In an effort to conserve water, the Town is planning to reduce water usage on Town property by approximately 20%. Athletic fields will continue to be irrigated to meet service levels and other areas will be maintained to minimize long-term impacts.

Stay tuned for updates

The Town is actively monitoring snowpack, water supply projections, and water usage data, and will have more information regarding water allocations from Northern Water in April. This information will help the Town determine whether additional/mandatory water restrictions may be necessary. We'll provide an update as soon as it's available.

Help us conserve water now by waiting to turn on sprinkler systems!
