Happy Summer, Superior! The heat is officially here, but so are opportunities for fun in the sun. Below are some ideas for getting outside, staying active and staying connected in your community despite the hotter temperatures. Don’t forget to bike or walk to work this Wednesday, June 24!

As always, thank you for helping make Superior a sustainable, resilient, and vibrant community.

Save Superior’s only neighborhood bus route!

RTD Route 228 bus

The RTD Board will vote in July on a proposal to eliminate Route 228. RTD has proposed discontinuing Route 228 in September 2026. Route 228 is currently the only fixed-route neighborhood bus service operating within Superior, connecting residents to Downtown Superior, local neighborhoods and the U.S. 36 and McCaslin Park-n-Ride. It also provides regional connections to Flatirons Crossing Mall, Louisville and Lafayette.

Over the past year, the Town of Superior and RTD worked together to extend the route and add a direct connection to the Park-n-Ride. Discontinuing the route now, before those improvements have had time to build ridership, would eliminate Superior's only local bus service and reduce access to the regional transit network. Superior residents contribute more than $4.5 million annually to RTD through the regional 1% sales tax.

Whether you ride Route 228 every day, use it occasionally or simply believe Superior should continue to have neighborhood bus service, your feedback can help inform RTD's decision. Share your experiences, explain why local transit matters, and suggest ways RTD can improve service and grow ridership rather than eliminate Superior's only neighborhood bus route.

Take action before the July vote:

  1. Email RTD Board members - Tell RTD why Route 228 matters to you, your family or your ability to access jobs, schools and services. Board members will make the final decision.

  2. Submit a comment - Use RTD's online comment form or call 303-299-6000 to speak with staff directly.

  3. Speak at a July RTD Board meeting - Residents can provide testimony before the RTD Board votes on the proposed service change. View July board meeting dates and participation options.

The Town of Superior is recruiting Green Team Volunteers who are passionate about reducing landfill waste and ensuring materials are properly sorted.

The Green Team is a dedicated group of volunteers who help the Town's sustainability efforts by guiding event attendees in using zero-waste stations at some of our biggest events, including the Summer Concert Series, 4th of July, and Chili & Beer Fest. You can sign up for one or many!

Interested in joining?

  1. Apply through the Town of Superior Volunteer Registration and Release Form.
  2. Under the header labeled Green Team, select "yes". You will need to watch the training video, review the sustainability one-pager, and complete a couple of short knowledge check questions.
  3. Attend a brief in-person training at Civic Space to pick up your T-shirt.

Once all the steps above are complete, a Town staff member will provide the Green Team password so you can begin signing up for shifts. Volunteers who stay for the entirety of their shift will receive a $25 Visa gift card!

Simple steps to protect Superior’s waterways

Aerial image of the pond in Purple Park

With Coal Creek and our local ponds, the Town works hard to monitor and manage the local aquatic ecosystems we all enjoy. Staff prioritizes maximizing ecological health and biological diversity and limiting the application of chemicals.

One innovative example is the Town's use of a Water Beetle remote-controlled aquatic weed harvester to manage seasonal duckweed overgrowth in local ponds. Keep an eye out for it the next time you're visiting a pond around Town!

A major contributor to pond overgrowth is excess fertilizer runoff from nearby lawns and gardens. You can help protect our waterways by adopting more sustainable landscaping practices. The options below not only support healthier ponds and streams but also benefit pollinators, pets, and people while conserving water, storing carbon, and reducing the need for pesticides.

  • Aeration: Aeration helps your grass grow thicker by allowing the roots to grow deeper, and keeps your lawn from becoming compacted. Plug aeration is the most effective method.
  • Apply Compost: Apply a quarter-inch layer of compost to your lawn after it’s aerated to provide key nutrients and microorganisms needed for best results. You can spread compost with a fertilizer spreader or make mounds and spread it over your lawn with a rake.
  • Water Effectively and Efficiently: Frequent shallow watering produces short grass roots that are less able to tolerate heat, drought, disease, and pests. Watering less often for longer periods allows the water to soak deeper into the soil and encourages deeper root growth. Deep grass roots produce thick, healthy grass above ground.
  • Organic Fertilizer: Synthetic fertilizers can harm the microorganisms in your lawn’s soil, and the excess runs off your lawn, contaminating local ecosystems. Organic fertilizers do not dissolve in water; instead, they are broken down by soil microorganisms. It takes a little more time for organic fertilizer to work, but it releases slowly over a longer period. Read the label and look for the word “Organic”.
  • Mowing: Set your mower blade height to three inches (bonus points if you use a manual or electric mower to help local air quality!). The leaves of taller grass photosynthesize more energy and grow deeper roots, making your grass more drought-tolerant and disease and pest-resistant. The thick grass, supported by deep roots, also outcompetes weeds. Leave the grass clippings on your aerated lawn to provide free nitrogen fertilizer, too!

For more details and information on the options above, read the City of Boulder’s step-by-step guide to organic lawn care.

Additionally, if taking care of your lawn is too time-consuming and expensive, replace it! Converting thirsty lawns into a waterwise landscape with native plants creates a low-water habitat to support pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while adding color and variety to your yard. Resource Central will remove and haul away unwanted turf, jump-starting your yard’s transformation. Learn more at ResourceCentral.org/lawn.

Make the switch to sustainable transportation

Commuting Solutions bike map

Summer is peak ozone season for Colorado and we can all help spare the air. Superior has multiple sustainable transportation alternatives that will save you money, reduce the number of cars on the road, reduce emissions, and improve local air quality directly.

  • Biking: Grab a bike and explore Superior’s 30 miles of well-maintained bike trails across 60 acres of open space. There are also many paths and bike lanes connecting residents around town and to neighboring communities. Bike to Work Day on June 24 is also a great opportunity to be rewarded for biking this summer!

  • Electric Vehicle CarShare: Residents can reserve Superior’s electric all-wheel drive CarShare located on the first floor of the Downtown Superior Parking Garage at 2250 Main Street! Sign up for a membership using the code SUPER_EV to receive $25 in driving credits and have the application fee waived. Simply pick up your vehicle at the time you reserved it and return it to the same location when you are finished. Visit carshare.org to sign up and learn more.

  • FlexRide: FlexRide is a supplemental bus service that connects residents to Park-n-Rides, work, medical centers, business parks, and other local destinations. Residents can make a reservation up to 30 days in advance and as little as 10 minutes before pick up time. FlexRide fares are $2.75 for a Standard 3-hour pass and $1.35 for a Discounted fare. Youth 19 and under ride at no cost. You can book a ride at rtd-denver.com or call 303-299-6000.

  • Buses: Three main bus routes service the Town. Residents can visit rtd-denver.com to determine which routes and services will help you reach your destination.
    • Route 228A/228F: Takes residents from the McCaslin Park-n-Ride, Downtown Superior, along Rock Creek Parkway, through Louisville, and to Flatiron Crossing in Broomfield. Consider taking this hourly bus for any of your local trips.
    • Route FF: The Flatiron Flyer can take commuters to Boulder and all the way to Aurora. Buses are more frequent during rush hour, but otherwise are every 20 minutes.
    • Route AB1: Takes residents to and from the Denver Airport hourly. Instead of paying for airport parking, you can sit back and read a book while the bus takes you there on time.
