Spring is almost here, so it's time to get outside!
If you want to learn about birds or take a hike, you're in the right place. Superior's Parks, Recreation & Open Space team has coordinated a month of excitement just for you!
Little Explorers Wednesday, April 1 | 10 to 10:45 a.m. Superior Community Center (1500 Coalton Road)
The Brave New Explorers Club, led by Shani Horváth, invites young learners to discover the magic of nature! Through hands-on activities and creative play, youngsters will explore plants, animals, and the wonder of the world around us. Sign up is required. A parent or guardian must attend with participating children.
The Duck Walk - Waterfowl Watching Saturday, April 4 | 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Purple Park (1310 S. Pitkin Ave.)
When spring springs, thousands of birds leave their southern homes for the breeding grounds of the north. Many stop over in Superior's lakes and ponds. Join naturalist Dave Sutherland for this early morning walk to spy on migrating ducks, geese, and shore birds. Bring gloves, binoculars, and a spotting scope if you have one.
Owl Prowl Friday, April 10 | 7 to 8 p.m. Community Park (1350 Coalton Road)
Have you ever seen an owl in the wild? In this free program led by Raptor Monitoring Program volunteer Peter Ruprecht, you can learn about what owls we have in Colorado, what tools you need to find them, and how to responsibly view these majestic raptors in the wild. Registered participants should meet at the basketball courts near Indiana Street and Coalton Road. Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and binoculars (if you have them) and dress warmly for this after-sunset program.
Coyote Ridge Hike Saturday, April 18 | 9 to 11 a.m. South Pool (3300 Huron Peak Ave.)
Learn everything you need to know about local wildlife while taking a hike through Superior's Coyote Ridge Open Space alongside Wildlife Ecologist Ashley DeLaup. Bring your own water and snacks, and please dress appropriately for the weather.
Are you interested in ensuring that Superior's open spaces remain beautiful?
Consider joining Weed Warriors, a group of volunteers dedicated to removing invasive weeds to support native plant growth, habitat health, and the improvement of our open spaces.
The Weed Warriors season runs from April to September. Interested volunteers can request to join CitSci, the platform used for group announcements, reporting, photos, and communication.
The Town of Superior will provide volunteers with tools and equipment. Please reach out to Open Space Ranger Phary Om by email with questions about the program.
You can learn more about noxious weeds in Colorado on the Colorado Department of Agriculture website.
