Not all e-bikes are the same; there are three classes defined by speed and features. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications for motor wattage and maximum speed.
Class 1 and 2 e-bikes provide assistance up to 20 miles per hour and are generally allowed on most multi-use paths and designated open space trails. Class 3 e-bikes can reach up to 28 miles per hour, are for riders 16 and older, and are limited to road use only.
Motors above 750 watts are considered motorized vehicles, which may include electric dirt bikes, electric motorcycles, or mopeds. These powerful bikes can reach 40–50 mph, are not allowed on multi-use trails, and may only be used on designated motorized trails or tracks. On streets, they require a valid motorcycle endorsement, registration, plates, and insurance.
