Historical Commission Corner

As the year comes to a close, we decided to share some Historical Commission accomplishments over the past year. The Commission is proud of its achievements and looks forward to the challenges upcoming in 2026.

Superior Historical Commission 2025 Highlights:

  • Completed the second of three stages of work on the Miners Memorial in Asti Park by installing brass plaques that list those who lost their lives in accidents at the Industrial Mine. The Commission also worked with an artist who is designing a bronze statue that will be the final stage of the project.
  • Hosted two educational programs
    • An intriguing lecture by guest presenter Mary Reilly McNellan, “If These Stones Could Talk,” about Boulder’s Columbia Cemetery
    • A two-part program with Right Relationship Boulder that included a daytime mobile exhibit addressing the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre, called “Breathing Healing into the Banks of Sand Creek.” That evening the organization Right Relationship Boulder provided a presentation about Native history in Boulder County.
  • Hosted field trips at Asti Park Historical Museum, Grasso Park and the Town Hall board room (with Mayor Lacis) for Superior Elementary School and Eldorado PK-8 second graders.
  • Kicked off the first of quarterly open house days at the historic Superior Cemetery and then established a schedule for future open days at the Cemetery.
  • Provided docents for our regular museum open days at the Asti Park Historical Museum and Grasso Park Interim Museum.
  • Hired professional historic craftsmen restore the circa 1930s outhouse at the Asti Park Historical Museum. Longtime Commission supporter Carol and Bob Affleck graciously provided consultation throughout.
  • Continued to accept and catalog donations to our historic artifact collection. Our collection is getting closer to where it was pre-Marshall Fire and we are ecstatic about that.
  • Enlisted the volunteer assistance of a Superior High School senior to research native language vocabulary that might fit into the naming process for the Coyote Ridge Trail project.
  • Benefitted from very productive monthly work days at the Asti Park Historical Museum focused on cataloging and organizing donation inventory.

Museums closed in January

Given the proximity of the holidays and potential weather conditions, the Historical Commission has decided not to open the museums in early January.

We plan to be open as usual on Feb. 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. See you then!

What is this historic artifact?

We occasionally ask readers if they can identify what function our artifacts might have served. This item is made of light metal, measures about 8 inches square and 4 inches high. What do you think? Tune in next month to find the answer.

Flat metal square base with centered vent holes and four rectangular frames that meet at the top to a smaller metal square.
