CDOT to issue civil penalties for work-zone speeding on Hwy 119

Published on January 06, 2026

Effective Jan. 12, 2026, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will issue $75 civil penalties to drivers exceeding posted speed limits in the Colorado Highway 119 work zone between Boulder and Longmont.

This new camera-based speed enforcement program was introduced after Colorado had 31 work zone fatalities in 2024, the highest number ever recorded. This data highlights an urgent need to address the significant dangers of speeding, especially along high-risk corridors. By deploying automated vehicle identification systems (AVIS) in the CO 119 work zone, CDOT is implementing consistent and neutral enforcement when issuing civil penalties to motorists traveling an average of 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit.

Civil penalties will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner within 30 days of the violation if the vehicle is registered in the state of Colorado, and within 60 days for vehicles registered out of state. Motorists issued a civil penalty in the mail do not receive points on their licenses.
