2026 Hard-to-Recycle

Three residents participating in the hard to recycle event.

Superior residents are invited to participate in the annual Household Hazardous Waste and Hard To Recycle event in partnership with Eco-Cycle and Boulder County Hazardous Waste at Eldorado K-8 School.

Registration is required. Register and view available timeslots on the SignUpGenius event website. Please select one timeslot per car - you may bring as many recyclable items as you would like during that slot.

Accepted Items

  • Paint (oil-based, latex and aerosols)
  • Paint thinners and strippers
  • Pesticides, insecticides and fungicides
  • Cleaning products
  • Car care products
  • Propane cylinders, 1-lb (Coleman-size)
  • Fluorescent bulbs (straight tubes and CFLs)
  • Fuels (diesel, gasoline and kerosene)
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Thermometers and mercury containing devices
  • Batteries (car, household and rechargable)
  • Pool/spa chemicals
  • PCB ballasts
  • Nicotine vaporizers (disposable devices, batteries, cartridges and e-liquid. No THC.)
  • Computers, laptops, cell phones and tablets
  • Gas-powered mowers
  • Plastic bags, bubble wrap and thin foam packing sheets
  • Small scrap metal (4' length/width maximum)
  • Bike tires and tubes
  • Books and manuals

Not Accepted Items

  • Drums larger than 5 gallons
  • Ammunition, explosives, fireworks and flares
  • Asbestos-containing insulation, tile and linoleum
  • BBQ propane tanks larger than 1-lb, compressed gas cylinders
  • Medical waste
  • Expired meds
  • Sharps
  • Non-hazardous wastes
  • Radioactive materials
  • Business waste - small quantities accepted by appointment only at HMMF (see website for details)
  • White block foam packaging #6, rigid styrofoam
  • Plate glass windows
  • Big durable #2 plastics (play structures, lawn furniture, etc.)
  • Bicycles
  • Appliances containing freon
  • Shredded paper or service to shred paper
  • Single-stream recycling
  • Cooking oil
  • Mattresses


Most items are free to recycle, but prices (if applicable) are listed below. The Town will cover 50% as funding allows.

  • CRT TVs and monitors ($0.69/lb)
  • Flatscreen TVs, audio equipment, small appliances and monitors ($0.59/lb)
  • Fire extinguishers ($8.00/unit)
  • CDs and DVDs ($3.00/lb)
  • Misc. electronics not included in free items ($0.59/lb)

The Town does not offer vouchers for new electric-powered lawn equipment. However, participating Colorado retailers offer a 30% discount on new electric lawn equipment. Switching to electric lawn equipment reduces noise pollution and air pollution. View the list of participating retailers reported on the Colorado Public Interest Research Group's webpage
