Winston Morgan & Robert Tovado

In recognition of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the Historical Commission invites you to see its newest display firsthand. The World War II Marine Corps uniform of former Superior resident Winston Morgan is on display thanks to donations from his daughter, Marilyn Morgan. Additional military artifacts include wartime ration books and photos, as well as a shadow box containing the military history of Louisville/Superior resident and Silver Star recipient Robert Tovado.

The Morgan family emigrated from Wales, where Winston’s father, William, learned coal mining. In the 1910s, the family moved to Colorado to work the mines. William Morgan was a foreman at Superior’s Industrial Mine and later worked at other mines in Boulder County. The family lived in the Industrial Mine Camp. Young Winston and his sister attended school in Superior. Winston graduated from eighth grade in 1921.

Corporal Winston Morgan

Though married and 33, Winston joined the Marine Corps and served on several islands as Allied forces advanced toward Japan.

Robert Tovado also served with honor in the Pacific theater as a Pharmacists Mate assigned to the Marines. The Louisville resident received the Silver Star for his heroism during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. He evaded enemy fire and saved 13 Marines. He was killed while trying to reach the 14th. He received the award posthumously, and rests at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in New Mexico.

We invite you to view these special artifacts illustrating Superior’s history during our upcoming museum open dates and to visit the Historic Superior Cemetery on two occasions. Walk the grounds, where the first burial took place in 1873, and visit the graves of two confirmed Civil War veterans.
