Superior Sentinel: December 2025

Published on December 01, 2025

Hello Superior,

As we close out 2025, I want to thank our residents, volunteers, businesses, and Town staff for a year of meaningful progress and continued resilience.

This past year, Superior officially became a Home Rule Municipality, strengthening our local control and giving residents a greater voice in how our community is governed. We also continued making steady progress on Marshall Fire recovery. Today, 75% of destroyed homes and businesses have received Certificates of Occupancy, and 85% are rebuilt, permitted, or under construction. Key infrastructure repairs—from asphalt to irrigation—were completed as well.

Our infrastructure investments were significant in 2025, with major roadway work completed on Rock Creek Parkway, McCaslin, Coalton, Sycamore, 76th, and the Sagamore neighborhood, along with the new Coal Creek pedestrian bridge in Original Town. Looking ahead, voter-approved sales tax funding will support the 2026 reconstruction of Rock Creek Parkway and Indiana Street, Community Park playground improvements, as well as renovations of both the North and South Pools during the 2026–2027 off-season.

Economically, 2025 brought new businesses, record-low vacancy rates, and continued growth in Downtown Superior, including the Alta Flatirons groundbreaking and progress on a Hyatt Studios hotel and multiple dining options, including a food hall.

Thank you for your trust and engagement. I wish you and your family a joyful holiday season and a happy New Year.

Respectfully,
Mayor Mark Lacis

Town of Superior officials travel to D.C. to advocate for updated ZIP code boundaries

Three people in suits pose in front of Senator John Hickenlooper's office and three flags

Town of Superior officials joined leaders from 12 municipalities across the nation in Washington, D.C., in early November to ask Congress for help from the United States Postal Service to update ZIP code boundaries that cause multiple problems for communities, including lost internet sales tax revenue, delays in mail delivery, confusion in the dispatch of first responder services, and increased insurance premiums.

Mayor Pro-Tem Jason Serbu and Council Member Heather Cracraft met with Senator Bennet and his staff, as well as staff members from the offices of Senators Hickenlooper, Lankford, Moreno, Baldwin, and Barrasso and staff from the office of Representative Boebert to discuss the specific impact of outdated ZIP code boundaries on residents and businesses in Superior.

Disaster Preparedness and Recovery

Be prepared and safe this holiday season!

A person drinks from a coffee cup silhouetted by holiday lights

The holidays are a great time to bring family and friends together to celebrate.

Keep everyone safe with these tips:

  • Stay alert and practice defensive driving. Designate a sober driver after a holiday party.
  • Check light strings for damage, avoid overloading outlets, and unplug decorations when unattended.
  • Keep decorations at least 3 feet away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources and avoid blocking exits.
  • Wash your hands frequently when handling food to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Place candles on stable surfaces, away from children and pets. December sees a sharp rise in candle related fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association candles cause on average 46% of fires in December. Make sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it. (Check out the Town's Fire Extinguisher Safety video!)

For more holiday safety tips, give this American Red Cross article a read.

Enjoy the holiday season!

Pile burning season returns with cooler temperatures and snow

Piles of wood burning in a snowy forest

Fire managers on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests are preparing for pile burning season this winter. Current and forecasted weather conditions may create favorable pile burning conditions over the next several months.

Pile burning is a type of prescribed fire that helps remove woody debris from the forests, reducing the potential of more impactful, unplanned fire activity at other times of the year. Pile burning helps eliminate branches, limbs, twigs and small logs that can't easily be removed through other means due to topography, access or cost feasibility. Pile burning typically follows forest thinning projects in overgrown forests.

Please be aware that smoke, flames, and glowing embers are often visible and are a normal part of pile burning operations.

For a detailed list of pile locations across the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, please check InciWeb. See our interactive map for additional information on each of these project locations. This map also includes information on broadcast burn projects, active burns and recent project completions on the Forest.

  • Composting those extra food scraps or any leftovers you’re not going to eat after any large holiday meals.
  • Use this Storage Guide from Save the Food to learn how to properly store ingredients and leftovers to extend their shelf life and slow how quickly they spoil.

Keep It Clean Partnership reminds you to protect waterways after winter storms

Person shovels snow from the sidewalk

Protect waterways after winter storms by shoveling snow onto vegetated areas and limiting the amount of deicer you use at home.

Melting snow will carry deicers and other pollutants into storm drains that drain directly to nearby streams. Deicers of any kind will negatively affect the environment in large quantities.

If using a deicer, apply it as soon as snowy or icy conditions appear. Deicers help break the bond between ice and pavement to make shoveling easier. They do not evaporate the snow and ice, so adding more does not eliminate the need to shovel.
